Boston Triathlon Club Craig Oliver travelled to Tartu, Estonia in July to take part in the ETU European Championships.

The event saw 1950 entries from all across Europe and showcased triathlon on a stage which took over the small medieval town of Tartu..

Overlooked by Caf’e’s, Bars and old toy making shops – Cobbeled streets and a town steeped in history and culture, the backdrop for the event was breath taking!

With days leading up to the event highs of 33 degrees was going to a sweat fest!

Swim was a downstream river swim extended to 1750m – 1 week before the event and also due to the temperatures told this would be a non-wetsuit event.

Cycle was a 40KM 2 loop race – Timetrial flat road out and back for about 7.5mile then a 5mile inner city loop up and down a few climbs and then repeat!

Run – 10km through the city up and down the river and complete on a beautiful backdrop of the pink town hall down a blue carpeted shoot!

Craig’s race went off to a flying start with an 18min swim and first leaving the water by a good 15-20m  – Straight into transition and leaving in first place it was halfway through the bike ride before the best in Europe started to pass – Oliver battled on through the bike finishing with a respectful average of 22.4mph .. then onto the run… Hydration over this distance in this heat is key and maybe a little wiser on the bike would have made the run slightly faster but a run time of 42 min – and a PB over this distance of 2hr 7min puts Oliver 17th in Europe….

Fantastic experience – On to the next one!!!!!
